Plumbing isn’t necessarily pretty, but it’s the thing that keeps us all looking good at the end of the day. Running water is am essential for modern life, without you’re just camping. When you turn on a tap, you take it for granted the journey the pipes make from beginning to end, watching the installation gives you that x-ray view.
We chose Bromur to supply our heating, ventilation and plumbing. Based in Galway, they were recommended by our neighbours, but we were also very impressed with the knowledge and professionalism of James, Fergus and Gerry. I often feel these companies take on the burden of educating the market on the new systems and technologies. There are so many options out there and it’s not exactly retail therapy. They were also great at advising on the best quality sanitary fittings that won’t give us headaches in the future.
Once the plumbers land on site you need to be very specific on how your bathrooms will work. Exact positions of where to turn on the shower, the height of the rain dance head, bearing in mind the height of you and your other half. If you’re using inwall taps, you need to give the height above the basin and vanity units. Basically, anything hidden in the wall needs setting out and you need to have taps and mixers for the first fix. I produced 1:20 drawings of the bathrooms and stuck them to the wall. This reduced any ambiguity and the possibility of outdated drawings. During this stage I was on site every day to answer any questions. When you’re the main contractor, architect and client, this level of attention is required, it’s also probably easier for the plumber to deal with one person.
The ventilation runs required the same level of planning. The supply ducts were positioned to avoid been over beds and interfering with lighting layout. Bromur were happy to get this right on site. The team were conscious of our air tightness requirements and taped and sealed any cuts required in the membrane. Life on site is so much easier when you don’t have to chase people. Good trades are a blessing.
