Claí cloch – Stone Walling

Dry-stone walling is the traditional boundary wall in the rocky fields of Connemara, the fields are relatively small and there is an abundance of rock in the ground. During Construction we set aside the large boulders and rocks to the side, we could use the stone of the field later on for our boundaries. Using the same stone resonates with the landscape and helps ground the new built form back into the landscape.

We met our stone-waller as he was working on a neighbouring house. We could see that he had a good sense of how to achieve the task.
